Petra (1980) is an intuitive artist. She dedicates her hands and her heart to create works of art of the body (mostly women), each with a different story to share. An art piece by Petra Flach is about sheer liberation and acceptance, for the audience and the muse alike. Petra loves to show sensual and curvy women with all their vulnerabilities, but even more to show their strength and elegance in pure beauty.
At the age of seven, Petra created her first art piece, it was of her grandmother. Through the many travels she has made, Petra has become interested in classical sculpting. She uses a mix of classical sculpting methods and modern techniques that result in sculptures that attract attention. Petra plays with the illusion that her sculptures are classical. This seems so in the basic form and composition, but in this she deviates from the technique, materials and the stories she tells. These topics are quite modern and are about liberation, feeling free in your body, body positivity and finding absolute comfort and strength within yourself.
Petra: "This process has grown steadily over the years. After my studies, in which art played a major role, my travels took me to unique locations (solo around the world in 14 months, 2003/2004). Treasured by the fantastic art I found in Southern Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, my love for classical sculptures continued to grow. Besides the admiration, I also had a willpower to explore and master new techniques and skills in creating my own sculptures. I wanted to tell real stories, just like the artists did in those classical times.
But... are our stories important enough to be told? I really do think so! As a woman, I experience the pressure of this modern world that we impose on ourselves. We need to know everything, be talented, social, pretty, sensual and so much more. But sometimes I wonder... where is the authenticity in all the images we see? As a society, we shout out so many opinions and insecurities to the world through social media. But I am convinced that confidence or strength is not found on the other side of that (mobile) screen. We need to find more love and serenity in ourselves. My sculptures convey the message of inner sensuality, strength and self-acceptance. They are shown in pureness and with love. They are made for the art lover, connoisseur and enthusiast and come directly from my heart and my hands. I created them to convince the beholder to take a step back, relax, accept and honor themselves in their purest form. To find your inner Aphrodite, you don't need the conformation of another person, you can only find it in yourself.
These are the stories I want to portray through the beautiful contemporary casting and sculpting techniques. I combine classical sculpture methods with making casts of bodies or body parts. I add parts or leave things out. It is a process that naturally arises as I am working. I think in advance about which direction I want to go, but in practice I am always guided by my own feelings."
Anyone watching or experiencing a sculpture by Petra Flach will notice that it itself evokes love and acceptance, but also appreciation for the impressively creative process of making these sculptures. Petra picks her models meticulously. The process of creating a body sculpture is demanding and challenging. Petra also loves working with designers and architects, as well as other national and international artists, to map and exhibit in unique locations about self-acceptance, beauty and (a little) more love and respect for yourself.
